ROGER BALLEN
Roger Ballen was born in New York in 1950 but for over 30 years he has lived and worked in South Africa. His work as a geologist took him out into the countryside and led him to take up his camera and explore the hidden world of small South African towns. His photographic career made its turning point when he left the U.S. at the end of the 70s and started to travel extensively around the world and then settled down in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1982. The catalogue presents a selection of works from 1989 to 2002, when Ballen spent most of his time depicting the emarginated social condition of workers and farmers in suburban and rural areas of South Africa. Ballen portrayed people in the miserable set of their houses, with b/w film and with the use of flash, combining an approach proper to reportage photography with his personal inspiration of dreamlike visions.
